Mariachi Ghost
Winnipeg's Mariachi Ghost is a band that I don't know a lot about, but in a way that's good, because it seems like a mysterious endeavour, with bandmembers wearing skull make-up and seemingly not a lot of biographical material out there. With a little digging, we could easily find out more...but I like the music and the look, for now that's enough. A unique ensemble for these parts. There's an ep out there called Machete that is available at the following locations for $10:
McNally Robinson Booksellers
Into The Music
The Winnipeg Folk Festival Store
Music Trader

School of Seven Bells do Siouxsie and the Banshees For You
School of Seven Bells are riding their version of 80's ethereal pop and a bit of electronic skronk with a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' Kiss Them for Me.
You know who School of Seven Bells sometimes remind me of? Juno award-winning Rose Chronicles, that's who.

Creosote - Area Man
Regina's Creosote is really a one-man wrecking crew named Gord Smith, and he recently released a new album called Area Man. A very long time ago, Smith walked up to me and, apropos of nothing, asked: "Son Volt or Wilco?" Upon receiving my answer, he smiled and quickly moved on. That question stuck in my mind, and I always expect to hear some alt-country coming from Smith, but Area Man is straight-out rock. Or maybe that should be ROCK, because Creosote's new album sounds like the kind of unabashedly riff-heavy, harmony-driven hard rock we don't really hear much anymore. Area Man almost sounds like grunge never happened, that filter that unfortunately spawned Pickleback, Theory of a Default, et cetera.
Smith also has the er, guts to cover Rush on the new record. Not only that, but he chooses a 1980's keyboard-laden track from Power Windows to cover - Mystic Rhythms. You can buy Area Man at iTunes. Creosote is also a son Volt tune. Coinkydink? Just don't call Cresote MR. Creosote.

Robyn Hitchcock is Unfrozen - Free mp3s Now, New Album Forthcoming
would like you to have a free song he tracked with KT Tunstall, as well as a live track featuring cool people like Green Gartside, Terry Edwards, Paul Noble, and conductor Sir James Fletcher.
The man himself explains:
"'There Goes The Ice' was written in October 2008 off the coast of Greenland on board the Grigor Mikheev, the Russian ship chartered by Cape Farewell to take a collection of artists and scientists up to Disko Bay where we visited a region of the imperilled Arctic. The photographer Chris Wainwright, had just filmed me spelling out Here Comes The Sun in semaphore, silhouetted on deck against the sunset. Surrounded as we were by icebergs 'calved' from the rapidly melting Arctic ice-cap, I found myself writing There Goes The Ice as a mournful echo of George Harrison's song.
I took the song fresh to KT Tunstall and her husband Luke Bullen in the cabin next door: KT obligingly sang harmony and Luke recorded us. Back in England the following June, Luke recorded KT and I performing this version, in their tent. KT also plays guitar on this and appears here courtesy of EMI/Virgin records."

Greg MacPherson - Party at Greg's video
Winnipeg's Greg MacPherson has unveiled a superfine new video for Party at Greg's from the album Disintegration Blues. I love when the animated arm starts pulling out reconstructed animated record covers, such as Greg's or Slint, for example. Has a Winnipeg artist ever released a video as cool as this?

Scott Nolan - Award-winning You Rock, We Roll and Hooking up With Ozzy, Tom Waits, and Kelly Clarkson
Winnipegger Scott Nolan's song "You Rock, We Roll" has won Third Place in the Americana category in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition. There were over 16,000 entries from 112 countries. Winners were selected by a diverse panel of judges that included Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Smith (The Cure), Tori Amos, Kelly Clarkson, and John Mayall. Do you think they sat around and listened to everything? Together? I'd love to be in the room, with Ozzy mumbling, Waits growling, Beck sitting there silently, Smith arguing just to be contrary, and Clarkson doing...well, what would she be doing? I have no idea, but as the real "pop" star in that list, perhaps she would represent that faction. I wouldn't mind hearing Nolan doing a collaboration with any of those artists. I know Nolan is a Tom Waits fan, I've seen and heard him do a mean Waits cover. Anyhow, 3rd place Americana (Canadiana?) is cool, n'est-il pas?
Upcoming Scott Nolan live extravaganzas:
July 4 Sask tba
July 6&7 nanton auditorium
July 12 ironwood Calgary
July 14 the slice lethbridge
July 18 vancouver tba
July 20-22 island folk fest Victoria
