Dum Dum Girls - Too True, Rimbaud Eyes and Sundry Free MP3s

The new record from Dum Dum Girls entitled Too True enters our world on Jan. 28. New single Rimbaud Eyes is an easy ear-worm chorus, familiar flat rat-a-tat 80's drum sounds, and reverb-drenched chiming gtr - what's not to like? Head DDG Dee Penny says she hears a number of influences in her new songs, Suede, Siouxsie, Cold-wave Patti, Madonna, and The Cure, among others. Some of her songs in the past have recalled Mazzy Star, early Cult, and Divinyls to my ears, so I think you can sense where her sensibilities lie. Even the album cover looks like 1989 to me.

Inbreds - Best Canadian songs of all Time No. 9

This series of posts will be offering the definitive list of the best Canuck tunes ever recorded, scientifically tabulated, collated and obfuscated by the Brain of Scruff, in absolutely-not numerical order. Check out the list so far here.

How amazing can a rock band become with only two instruments? Clearly a lot of people jumped on The White Stripes bandwagon. But years before that pair managed to pull off garagey hits, The Inbreds were a duo that made their mark primarily featuring only bass, drums and voice. Joyrides of fuzzy bass propelled bittersweet choruses, oft-restrained percussion gave way to cymbal-crashing waves, voices straddled an invisible line between euphoria and melancholy.

Happy New Pixies Ear! New, Better Gigantic? EP-2 & Video for Blue-eyed Hexe

Like a surprise party, Pixies the other day released the second EP in what seems to be a series. EP-2 has four songs just like last year's EP-1, but Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have offered a few comments on each song. Francis tells us that Blue-Eyed Hexe is a "witch-woman kind of a song", check out the video below. Santiago says Magdalena was born out of "weird Moog pedals that sounded like water". Francis suggests that "we basically needed a better Gigantic", and Greens and Blues "fills the emotional niche that ‘Gigantic’ occupied, another show-closer". Santiago reveals that Snakes came required him to include "sliding guitar just to emulate a snake".

For those that didn't think the first EP fixed their old-school Pixies jones, these tracks might do the trick, because it seems the band was trying to emulate its own past. Sounds good to me, even more like the Pixies of yore than the first four on EP-1.

You can purchase numerous formats and packages at the Pixies website.
