Best of last year, what's to come and The End of Scruffy?
That pic above is the end of Yak. And right now it looks like this might be the end of Scruffy the Yak, or at least for an indefinite period of time. My laptop died, making it almost impossible to put this thing together. So here's a round up of a bunch of artists I didn't get the time to post about, some of which are my favourites for 2014, and some newer stuff. See ya 'round.
Ryan Adams finally embraced his inner Bryan Adams, Tom Petty, even Rick Springfield. Top 5 album last year.

Sloan - Keep Swinging (Downtown): Is Sloan the Canadian KISS?
New Sloan? Yes. The album is called Commonwealth, there's a side for each guy (like the KISS solo records!), out September 9. Kiss made a concept record (The Elder), and Andrew Scott's side is an 18-minute suite called Forty-Eight Portraits. It's possible the band will be doing a Vegas residency instead of KISS, I don't know.
Diamond Side (Jay):
1) We've Come This Far 2) You've Got A Lot On Your Mind
3) Three Sisters
4) Cleopatra
5) Neither Here Nor There
Heart Side (Chris):
6) Carried Away
7) So Far So Good
8) Get Out
9) Misty's Beside Herself
10) You Don't Need Excuses To Be Good
Shamrock Side (Patrick):
11) 13 (Under A Bad Sign)
12) Take It Easy
13) What's Inside
14) Keep Swinging (Downtown)
Spade Side (Andrew):
15) Forty-Eight Portraits

Have Not Been The Same - The Book (Best Canadian Rock Book of All Time?)! The Album! The Covers Album!
I read a lot of books about music. Probably too many. But for every one I have read that is devoid of soul, badly written (Rudy Sarzo), short on interesting details (Gene Simmons), egotistical and self-serving (Sammy Hagar, Dee Snider, Corey Taylor), there are those that are incredibly well-written (Joe Jackson), funny as heck and full of life (Keith Richards), or highly personal idiosyncratic ramblings (Ian Hunter). When you look at books that take on entire genres or a whole whack of bands such as Jon Savage's England's Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock, Clinton Heylin's Babylon’s Burning: From Punk to Grunge or Simon Reynolds's Rip It Up and Start Again, you can find some incredibly well-researched tomes. On of my favourites is Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991by Michael Azerrad. It focuses on bands that never sold tons of records, never really crossed over into the mainstream, or at least didn't do so before widespread Internet access or before Nirvana made raw noisy rock cool. Azerrad's book has received major accolades, and it's quite possible legions of music fans have started digging into Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, or Minor Threat, for example, in part because of that weighty piece of writing.
That brings us to Have Not Been the Same: The Can-Rock Renaissance 1985-1995, by Michael Barclay, Ian A.D. Jack, and Jason Schneider. Although the focus of the book is not the exact same as Our Band Could Be Your Life, one of the reasons I love it is because here too readers get to learn about artists that never became wildly popular, rich and famous. Have Not Been the Same also informs about artists that did become household names such as Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo, and those are good stories. But I think people that love music or care about Canadian music history should know about Jr. Gone Wild, The Inbreds, Hardship Post, The Rheostatics, Change of Heart, Stompin' Tom, The Doughboys, Eric's Trip, Voivod, Spirit of the West, the Pursuit of Happiness, 13 Engines, Art Bergmann, Thrush Hermit, and so on and so forth. Yeah, they are all covered there, and a lot more - the book is almost 800 pages long! Did you know that John K. Samson has praised the Northern Pikes? That little gem, along with almost everything else in the book, makes me want to shake jaded Canadians who put our own music down. It's time to celebrate the Pikes, Sons of Freedom, The Waltons and others who didn't get their due, as well as recognizing those who are doing it today, like Dearly Beloved, Royal Canoe, Brian Dunn, Ox, Imaginary Cities, Two Hours Traffic, and Metric, to name a few.
Last year was the 10-year anniversary of its first printing, so it was reissued with some new stuff. Pick it up now before it's unavailable again. You can purchase from ECW Press here, and you can even score the e-pub with recommended playlists for each chapter. Try an excerpt here.
The reason you are being told about this now is that a companion compilation of rare and unreleased music from 20 bands and artists was recently announced. Pheremone Recordings will put it out as a digital download, double LP, and CD on November 13.
The Have Not Been the Same album tracklisting may not be final, I have seen two different ones, but it will look pretty much like this (***** Starred titles are ones that may or may not be on the album, hopefully these will be clarified soon):

Sloan - Twice Removed Box Set and Tour
Sloan has reissued their quietly beautiful, of-course-we're-not-grunge classic second album Twice Removed (1994). Still my favourite album by Sloan, one of my faves of all time. The pretty Deluxe Edition package includes, according to the band's website:
•3 VINYL LP's: All LP's include 11" x 22" lyric inserts and standard LP jackets.
1. Twice Removed - Unavailable on vinyl since the 1990's.
2. The Demos - Demo versions of all the songs from Twice Removed in sequential order.
3. The Outtakes - Demo recordings of the songs that didn't make it to Twice Removed.
•7" VINYL SINGLE: Two more bonus demo recordings.
•Digital download of the entire box set in mp3 and FLAC formats.
•32 PAGE 12" x 12" BOOKLET: Containing unreleased photo's, artwork and ephemera from the Twice Removed era.
As well, detailed recollections of recording & touring the LP and full track by track commentary by the band members themselves.
Whew! Ephemera from the Twice Removed Era? They're probably giving away my old ticket stubs. Sounds awe-inspiring, now I have to scrape up $90 to fork out. Sloan's also touring, playing every song from Twice Removed plus whatever they feel like doing. And the band hits Winnipeg tomorrow!
Some tunes not on Twice Removed you may like:
The Answer Was You
Unkind
An instrumental cover of Sloan's Deeper Than Beauty. This version reminds me of seeing Hardship Post perform as a two-piece (just drums and guitar); when they launched into a stripped, raw version of Coax Me, it made my year. Hardship Post, where are you now?
Dearly Beloved's Better Days includes some Patrick Pentland. I don't think I've shared this before, shame on me. That Dearly Beloved record is prety darned good (it's called Hawk vs. Pigeon).

ECHO Songwriting Prize - Sloan, John K. Samson, Dan Mangan, Japandroids, Kathleen Edwards
Awards and awards shows come and go, I don't pay much attention. It's music I love, not the hulabaloo surrounding it. However, this year the Echo Songwriting Prize somehow has ended up with 5 nominees that I think are great. That has never happened before. Maybe the world IS ending this year.
Anyhow, SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) is supposed to spotlight "the most creative and artistic songs" with this prize, which you, the public, can vote on here. You can win an iPad, which might not help if that new tv show Revolution foretells our future.
You have until October 10 to vote, which you can do everyday if you want your favourite artist/band to receive $5000 (or you want that iPad). This year's nominees for the 2012 English SOCAN ECHO Songwriting Prize are "House that Heaven Built" by Japandroids, "Post-War Blues" by Dan Mangan, "Soft Place to Land" by Kathleen Edwards, "Unkind" by Sloan and "When I Write My Master's Thesis" by John K. Samson.

Sloan is Unkind, Covers Gary Numan's Cars
I would never have predicted that Sloan would be around for 20 years, never mind releasing a corker of a record like Double Cross at this point in their careers. Four guys that all write their own songs? How long can that last?
Anyway, a nice, simple cheap video (no big effects, tricks, or punchlines) does duuty for Unkind. You regulars will remember that I rarely watch videos, it's the music that I want, and that's what you get. A typically bored-looking Andrew Scott, Chris Murphy barely in the spotlight (?!), some nice Thin Lizzy guitar later on, What more could you ask for?

Sloan Gears Up for New Album With Video Previews, Hits Winnipeg - Maybe?
Sloan's new album The Double Cross is out May 10, and the band's been dropping video previews. The Pyramid is advertising a 20th anniversary Sloan show for Saturday, May 28, with the band playing tunes from all 10 of their albums, though Sloan's official site is still mum on the subject of a new tour. At any rate, the new songs sound fine, nothing earth-shattering, just more of the consistently melodic rock we expect from the guys. The first three Soundcloud tracks after the videos are from the new album, but make sure out check out the last, a choir covering Everything You've Done Wrong.

Scruffy's Grab Bag: The Strokes, Matt Epp, Sloan, Stripper's Union, Metric
Okay, I've been out of commission, here are some things that caught my eyes and ears over the last little while. It's an unconnected grab bag, deal with it.
New Sloan! O Happy day! Sloan will be releasing their 10th studio album, The Double Cross, on May 10th from Yep Roc Records, distributed by the Outside Music Label in Canada. The new single, Follow the Leader, does not sound much like other Sloan-tunes, which is cool, I like when artists keep their own blood flowing. I accidentally caught the band on a kid's show the other day and wondered when something new would appear, and magically, it did! Andrew Scott also has a new website for his artwork, check it out here.

Sloan Wins Again
Sloan has unleashed their second digital only release, B Sides Win. When they put out their "hits" collection A Sides Win a few years back, I wondered when this one would rear its head. I really wanted them to put the rare stuff out, and I really wanted them not to do it. I mean, I love this band, and at the moment, their first two records from back in the early 90's are competing with 2006's Never Hear the End of It (the mammoth 29 track try-everything-we-can epic) for my favourites. But, like many aging collectors, the digital age has trumped our personal passions. I worked hard to amass my rare Sloan tunes, bought rare 45s, German cd-singles, magazines with flexi-discs or cd-singles, compilations...and now for $9.99 you can get 26 of those hard-bought gems.
And it's good, too. From the early semi-grunge/shoegaze stuff to the genius pop that followed to the rock-radio-ready riffers to the newer let's-take-a-stab-at-greatness clasic songcraft showcases, it's all there. If you haven't been paying attention to these guys lately, remember, these are the B-sides, the cast-offs, the rarities - not every band can pull together a collection like this and still have good stuff left over. I think my fave that didn't make it on here was a cover that came out in 1992 - can anyone guess what it is? Click on "learn more" in the player below to buy or get more details.

Free Sloan, Vote Sloan
Starting out with some pretty Warren Zevon-like keyboards, Sloan's new tune is 2 1/2 minutes of pop bliss. Chris Murphy has always been capable of writing ultra-catchy tunes, and this one's up there. Sublime harmonies, straightforward chunky guitar, tambourine, handclaps, walking bassline in the chorus, and an uplifting feel throughout = the perfect little antidote to rainy fall doledrums. Listen below.
If you haven't been paying attention, Sloan have been making great music for longer than most in Canada. Outside of the Hip and Blue Rodeo, there ain't a whole lotta bands that have kept the same line-up and continued to put out new material on a regular basis since the 80s. If you think the boys have just been writing Futureshop ad soundtracks, guess again, there's been a pretty wide range of styles covered. Check out Witch's Wand from Sloan's last full-length, Parallel Play.
Sloan - Witch's Wand from Scott Cudmore on Vimeo.
(If the video above is not playing for you, go here)Sloan is also one of the artists who are on the list for CBC Radio 2's Great Canadian Song Quest. The boys will get a commission to write a tune commemorating Nova Scotia if they garner enough votes here. Interestingly enough, they're up against hands-down one of the best artist outs of all the 65 listed - Joel Plaskett.
Here's some upcoming tour dates, see 'em before they retire or die.
