Radiohead's King of Limbs was just released on Friday, and there have been some comments to the fact that it only contains 8 songs, which speaks to the fervent desire of fans for anything Radioheady. There are approximately 9429 reviews of the album out there already, so you don't need mine. I'm just chiming in to provide some live versions, remixes/mash-ups, and covers (that they're already out there also speaks to the fanaticism of fervent fans). Pick a few and add 'em to your album to make what you feel should be the proper number of songs for a complete experience. The Great Lotus and Hall North remixes are exceptionally fine, if you ask me.
The Cars recently released a full length video for Blue Tip, a song from their album Move Like This (out May 11). It's not a very inspired video clip (and if that is the album cover above, it seems the visual element of the band has not returned), but I still like the song. It doesn't blow me away, but I am definitely intrigued about the album. On this tune, Elliot Easton isn't really unleashed, but I have a feeling he will get opportunities to unpack some tasty guitar. Another track the band has teased us with brief clips, Free, seems to offer some spooky, edgy keyboards and elctronic drums as wel as harder six-string sounds (to hear the previous teaser clips, go here).
Okay, last time I posted about Radiohead, it turned out to be a rumour. This is the real thing, with an interpretive dance by Thom Yorke for the first video, including a touch of Axl Rose-type serpentine swagger. The band has released the digital version of their album King of Limbs one day early, so you can buy it now instead of tomorrow. My fave so far is Morning Mr. Magpie. The band's website offers this info about the digital version:
Radiohead's new record, The King Of Limbs, is presented here with a choice of two digital formats:
•MP3 version is a 320K constant bit rate file. •WAV version is a full CD quality uncompressed digital audio file. •One lucky owner of the digital version of The King Of Limbs, purchased from this website, will receive a signed 2 track 12" vinyl.
Of course, there's also a special version available:

Here's the full tracklist:

I've been meaning to write about Les Jupes for a couple of months, and since the last two posts have revolved around two Head in the Sand artists, I decided to keep the roll going. And I think the decision make sense as head Jupes-man Michael Petkau Falk runs Head in the Sand, as well as being the Artistic Director of the West End Cultural Centre. He's also the guy who has played guitar, keys and trumpet in the WCMA-winning Liptonians and co-produced their new album, as well as producing the Record of the Week Club.
So Petkau Falk is all over the music community here in sunny Winnipeg. Les Jupes' debut album Modern Myths was released January 11, and like all Head in the Sand releases I've encountered, it's an intriguing blend of musical styles, in this case pop, indie rock, folk, maybe even some electro touches. Petkau's warm baritone sets the band apart, especially because he doesn't always use it to convey melancholia (Tindersticks and The National do it par excellence already, right?). And I love the way he sings lyrics like "Mathematics is the universal language" (Mathematics).

By the way, Head in the Sand artist Royal Canoe's Today We're Believers was intro'd by me on CBC Radio 3's Track of the Day on Valentine's Day. You can listen to the brief podcast here.
The Liptonians are holding a cd release bash at the West End Cultural Centre tonight for Let's All March Back Into the Sea. Opneing will be Rusty Matyas (Waking Eyes, Imaginary Cities). The album's an undeniable mix of well-crafted pop melodies, insistent keyboards, dynamic percussion, vocals both delicate and invulnerable, and well-placed horns, as well as some unpredictable noises. This one will go down as one of the great records ever created in this province - I predict it's going to grace some best-of-the-year lists. For more info, check out an interview at Painting With Silence, and if you like it, vote for that blog on the Searchlight Best Music Website polls (Scruffy has been kicked off that island).
The Liptonians' Charlie's Back has been included in Sean Garrity's film Zooey & Adam which is screening in independent cinemas and film fests. See more about the film at zooeyandadam.com.

So I received an email informing that Scruffy the Yak has been tagged as a contender for the Searchlight Best Music Website in the land. Hadn't heard of the award, and I still don't know a lot about it. What does the winner get? Bragging rights? I'm not sure. But I looked at the "long list" of nominees and the polls, and now I'm even more confused.
Scruffy the Yak is up against artists like Arcade Fire, Tegan and Sara, Matthew Good, Joel Plaskett, Dan Mangan, Shad, Aidan Knight, Plants and Animals, Holy Fuck, Jim Bryson, New Pornographers, Buck 65, professional online magazines like Chartattack and Exclaim!, a radio station, labels or stores like Zunior, Paper Bag, Mint, a couple of folk fests...and I don't see how we all fit under the same category. I won't even get into the idea of awards and competitions, art and commerce here (but Dave Bidini did a superfine good article touching on that subject as per Stompin' Tom Connors here). But letting people know about Canuck sites is okay with me. What the heck, I may have been voted off the best music website island already, I'm not sure when the list is whittled down to 50. But if you want to vote for Scruffy the Yak, go here, have a ball. Here's the long list of nominees, go check a few out.

Beady Eye is Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock. In other words, the frontman from Oasis and three other guys who played with Oasis. So Beady often sounds like the nineties powerhouse. What's a little surprising is that the band's lyrics seem to make as much sense as Noel's did. But it's still catchy stuff. Roller is a fine tribute to snotty and silly Lennon, Four Letter Word sounds like a snarlier, less clever power pop Redd Kross, Bring the Light sounds like pre-1970s rock and roll before it became self-important, and the Man of Misery demo twists Green Onions into a short raw blast. I haven't heard the whole record yet, but I'm not sold so far. March 1st is the release date in Canada for the debut album entitled Different Gear, Still Speeding.
By the way, some drunkard has nominated Scruffy the Yak as Best Music Website in Canada. I know, I know, it's crazy. If you want to vote for this blog, go to this Searchlight page. You can vote once a day, if you want. Thanks!
Winnipeg's Royal Canoe heard you're feeling down about the endless winter. To combat those icicle-in-your-head blues, the band is giving you a free new song, Today We're Believers. Well, the tune is also a preview of the next album, as well as being an advance celebration of the boys' forthcoming showcases at Canadian Music Week and SXSW. Let's say the song is a showcase for a showcase. Featuring slinky bass, undersea bubbly water-drop synths, echoey piano, radio-ready electro-percussion, some cleverly-placed handclaps, confident falsettos and studio baritone, it came as a bit of a surprise. I half-expected that Royal Canoe would veer toward indie-rock with new tunes, but if anything, we're steering into the skid and embracing full-on spooky funk. Can I have some more, please?
Furthmore, RC snagged SXSW award winning director Matt Maryniuk (2009 SXSW Best Experimental Film for Cattle Call) to film a live-in-the-studio recording of another new track, Nightcrawlin. I've been told that the video features guest appearances by members of Winnipeg's wacky music community and will be released in late February.
mp3s will be posted for a limited time and are for promotional purposes only. If you like it, buy the albums, go to the shows, buy the t-shirts - support the artist so they can keep on keepin' on. Artists - if you would like an mp3 or video removed, please contact me directly at chrisyakchart@hotmail.com.
If you've got something Scruffy should hear, same email. Snail mail is cool too.
