I dunno about you, but I guessed that John K. Samson solo would mainly be in the folky singer-songwriter vein. Maybe not so much if the new song is indicative of the album - more straightforward than the roads The Weakerguys have been heading down, at least to my possibly gig-damaged ears. Album entitled Provincial out January 24, more info/ purchasing info here.

You know, you can leave a comment below, it's fine with me, and no one else cares.
The Details have released a new ep entitled The Original Mark. It's a teaser for their upcoming album, which will feature production by Stephen Carroll (of The Weakerthans) and Brandon Reid (The National). A Weakerthans connection makes sense, because The Details loosely fit in with other Winnipeg bands that like to have "The" before their name, write mature, oft-literate tunes, and contain musicians who have some punk in their pedigree - like The Weakerthans and The Paperbacks, for example.
The Original Mark tracklist: 1. The Original Mark 2. Surface Breaks 3. Uniform 4. Strings and Ribbons 5. Floor Plans (Remix)

Painting Over Silence reminded me that Jim Bryson and The Weakerthans are releasing their collaborative effort, The Falcon Lake Incident, on October 19th. They will celebrate that release with a free show at the Horseshoe Tavern on the same day. I really like the album cover, which reminds me of a Jim Bryson photo from awhile back that caused someone to comment, "Looks like a good album cover." Guess Bryson took that response to heart. The first officially-released song from the album, Metal Girls, includes great lyrics, happy pop hooks, warm keyboards, nicely-understated back-ups from John K.Samson, and and bap-bap-ba's. A guy from Ottawa recording at a cottage in the middle of winter in Manitoba with Winnipeg's favourite sons is an unusual (gutsy? crazy? inspired?) move, but the results sound good so far.
Here's a little video captured by The Weakerthans' Jason Tait of Bryson and John K. Samson singing Raised All Wrong "in front of the Kwik-E-Mart in Kitchener", according to jimbryson.org.
The Falcon Lake Incident cd and digital album will be available through MapleMusic Recordings, the vinyl will come out on Kelp Records.
Free download until June 15 of Samson's Cruise Night at Manitobamusic.com. The song's from the first of a series of 7"s exploring roads in Manitoba. Of course, you can catch The Weakerthans playing with Jim Bryson tonight at the Winnipeg Folk Fest, they will debut songs from their upcoming collaboration, The Falcon Lake Incident.
Today The Weakerthans released Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre, a cd/dvd package celebrating the band's 13 years and 4 albums. I missed the April 2009 show(s) (I think they played two nights) at which they recorded this stuff, but I did make it out to an aftershow party at the Albert, which was doubly good because the band played for fun and The Wind-ups opened up in their regular wildly energetic fashion.

In somewhat related news, John K. Samson's former band Propagandhi has announced a search for a new label and disclosed that Winnipeg's Smallman Records is closing down. I have not yet seen an official announcement and am anxiously awaiting a confirmation that it is not true, but sites such as Exclaim.ca are reporting it as reality. I sure hope it ain't true. Besides Propagandhi, Smallman's brought us fine recordings from Sylvie, Sights and Sounds, Comeback Kid, Sick City, Choke, Our Mercury, and Moneen, among others. It was also set to release Greg MacPherson's Mr. Invitation album March 30. Say it ain't so, Smallman!
I was sent the trailer for a new doc on the Albert, the place that has welcomed Husker Du, Green Day, Black Flag, The Weakerthans, The Watchmen, Comeback Kid, Propagandhi, Melvins, Stretch Marks, Personality Crisis, Sloan, New Duncan Imperials, Urge Overkill, Breath Grenades, Sons of Freedom, Kittens, UK Subs, Biohazard, Jesus Lizard, Nine Pound Hammer, The Vibrators, Cannibal Corpse, Telepathic Butterflies, The Wind-ups - the list goes on forever. Decades of rock, many flavours, blood, sweat and beers, long live the Albert.
