Blunderspublik - Reason (Hushfeed cover feat. Jay Churko)

Blunderspublik's new ep Kittens & Shit: Blunderspublik's Homage to '90s Winnipeg is now out for your listening pleasure and edification. Hushfeed, Kittens, Mikimoto, Bonaduces and Shit covers/reimaginings. You can download here, physical copies should be available soon from Sfeericle Records.

I love the idea of paying tribute to your own hometown.

Here's a few originals from the originators. It would be fun to hear newer acts like Greg MacPherson, Sons of York, Cannon Bros., Attica Riots, Warsaw, etc. do Streetheart, Stretchmarks, Breath Grenades, Harlequin, Liquid Bone Dance, QCK, or Grand Theft Canoe etc. and vice versa. Who can make this happen?

Hushfeed - Reason

The Bonaduces - Judy Blume Weekend

Newer Bonaduces:

Kittens - Butterfly

Nova - Midnight Midnight and Blue Star

Nova's debut album Midnight Midnight is now out, so you can once again revel in the intense delivery of Greg MacPherson as well as bandmates Jackie Hogue and Molly McCracken. Tension seems to play a strong role in the songs I've heard so far, with restraint and simplicity seemingly more important than brute power or overwhelming the listener. You can purchase the disc here or at your finer Winnipeg record shops. If you are quick, you can download Blue Star from the Manitoba Music website (only until Thursday).

Greg MacPherson - Frequencies

The mighty Greg MacPherson has released a video for Frequencies, which was shot almost a year ago, produced, filmed and edited by Rod Bailey aka Mcenroe. It's an amazing song and an excellent video. However, I couldn't help think that MacPherson's dancing style is eerily similar to Merl Bryck's in the Northern Pikes' Teenland video from back in the day. It doesn't hurt that they both chose to wear simple white shirts and jeans, either. But maybe the movements are just the regular for vocalists who are used to having a guitar strapped on - I seem to remember Springsteen shakin' a rug the same way. Hey, he had on the white t-shirt and jeans too. Maybe the clothes make the dancin' man.

Get Frequencies from the fine album Disintegration Blues right here.

Greg MacPherson - Party at Greg's video

Winnipeg's Greg MacPherson has unveiled a superfine new video for Party at Greg's from the album Disintegration Blues. I love when the animated arm starts pulling out reconstructed animated record covers, such as Greg's or Slint, for example. Has a Winnipeg artist ever released a video as cool as this?

The Weakerthans live, Smallman is dead(?)

Today The Weakerthans released Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre, a cd/dvd package celebrating the band's 13 years and 4 albums. I missed the April 2009 show(s) (I think they played two nights) at which they recorded this stuff, but I did make it out to an aftershow party at the Albert, which was doubly good because the band played for fun and The Wind-ups opened up in their regular wildly energetic fashion.

Here's the track listing, you can stream the whole thing at Spinner.com.

01. Everything Must Go

02. Tournament of Hearts

03. Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris in 1969)

04. Night Windows|Reconstruction Site

05. Aside

06. Civil Twilight

07. Bigfoot

08. Plea From A Cat Named Virtute

09. The Reasons|Sun In An Empty Room

10. Left and Leaving|Wellington's Wednesdays

11. Benediction

12. Manifest

13. One Great City!

14. This Is A Fire Door Never Leave Open

15. Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure

In somewhat related news, John K. Samson's former band Propagandhi has announced a search for a new label and disclosed that Winnipeg's Smallman Records is closing down. I have not yet seen an official announcement and am anxiously awaiting a confirmation that it is not true, but sites such as Exclaim.ca are reporting it as reality. I sure hope it ain't true. Besides Propagandhi, Smallman's brought us fine recordings from Sylvie, Sights and Sounds, Comeback Kid, Sick City, Choke, Our Mercury, and Moneen, among others. It was also set to release Greg MacPherson's Mr. Invitation album March 30. Say it ain't so, Smallman!
