Scott Nolan - Award-winning You Rock, We Roll and Hooking up With Ozzy, Tom Waits, and Kelly Clarkson

Winnipegger Scott Nolan's song "You Rock, We Roll" has won Third Place in the Americana category in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition. There were over 16,000 entries from 112 countries. Winners were selected by a diverse panel of judges that included Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Smith (The Cure), Tori Amos, Kelly Clarkson, and John Mayall. Do you think they sat around and listened to everything? Together? I'd love to be in the room, with Ozzy mumbling, Waits growling, Beck sitting there silently, Smith arguing just to be contrary, and Clarkson doing...well, what would she be doing? I have no idea, but as the real "pop" star in that list, perhaps she would represent that faction. I wouldn't mind hearing Nolan doing a collaboration with any of those artists. I know Nolan is a Tom Waits fan, I've seen and heard him do a mean Waits cover. Anyhow, 3rd place Americana (Canadiana?) is cool, n'est-il pas? Scott Nolan - Bad Liver and a Broken Heart

Heard Scott Nolan's Bad Liver and a Broken Heart the other day on Sirius XM the other day and was reminded of how great he is, especially on this trak from 2008's Receiver/Reflector. I'm pretty sure I have posted this before. Too bad, here it is again, listen up.

Scott Nolan: Montgomery Eldorado and Pulling Rabbits Out of His Hat

Scott Nolan recently released a new album called Montgomery Eldorado. At the moment, I'm thinking that this Winnipeg-based fella might take on the world. His warm, honest approach to roots rock music might make it seem like he's simply pulling out songs from a hat, and maybe he is, but I'd be willing to bet that Nolan labours over his his well-wrought tunes. Well-recorded without being over-polished, rough and ragged yet easy on the ears, Nolan has pulled off a magic trick all of his own. He's not afraid to throw in some overt soul and funk flavours (My My Hey Hey), he enjoys covering junkyard genius Tom Waits songs, and he's got people like Hayes Carll covering his tunes (Bad Liver and a Broken Heart). I told Nolan's record label guy a while back that I think Scott Nolan would have a nice long career, and he grinned and gave the succinct reply: "Yeah. We think so too".

Here's your bonus, Hayes Carll doing Tom Waits. Serendipity.
