Blunderspublik - Reason (Hushfeed cover feat. Jay Churko)

Blunderspublik's new ep Kittens & Shit: Blunderspublik's Homage to '90s Winnipeg is now out for your listening pleasure and edification. Hushfeed, Kittens, Mikimoto, Bonaduces and Shit covers/reimaginings. You can download here, physical copies should be available soon from Sfeericle Records.

I love the idea of paying tribute to your own hometown.

Here's a few originals from the originators. It would be fun to hear newer acts like Greg MacPherson, Sons of York, Cannon Bros., Attica Riots, Warsaw, etc. do Streetheart, Stretchmarks, Breath Grenades, Harlequin, Liquid Bone Dance, QCK, or Grand Theft Canoe etc. and vice versa. Who can make this happen?

Sons of York - Forever Potential

Winnipeg cool kids Sons of York have finally released a physical version of their new ep Forever Potential. I think they called it that so they could shorten it to Forever Pot. Or maybe because one of the songs on the ep is called Forever Potential, so there's a possible connection there. Anyway, it's chock full of S.O.Y. key words like "anthemic" (Young Blood Unite), "frenetic" (the last half of Forever Potential), "melancholy joy" (Sweet Sarah), and of course "fifties-style rock 'n' roll" (Contraption, Answer).

Sons of York in Brief Dust-Up, Emerge Mostly Unscathed - Video Evidence

Caught this video of Winnipeg's Sons of York mining the Outsiders visual thing once more. Seems they recorded a few tunes in NY with Gus Van Go and Werner F. which are available on iTunes. I'm surprised some label hasn't snagged this band yet, but maybe those days are over. Hey, shouldn't Splendour in the Grass with this band be Splendour in the Grease?

Sons of York

A few weeks back, when Winnipeg was experiencing a wonderful-yet-uncommonly warm November, Sons of York released their debut full-length, Black and White Summer. Coincidence? I think not. The brash energy of the band held back the normal onset of frosty eyebrows and toque-hair. I hear the power of early Police, the cheeky fun of The Undertones, maybe the well-crafted tunemanship (is that a word?) of The Payolas. Influences listed on the band's myspace site include The Hollies, Blue Shadows, and Jenny Lewis, which is a nice change from the usual. Dunno where the disco-funk-pop of the title track comes from, but it works somehow.

Doesn't this video look like 1985, after the band members fell in love with The Outsiders? Sodapop, Ponyboy, and Darry?

Three-part harmonies, clean-cut greasers, ultra-catchy songs, obscure Winnipeg references...what more could you ask for? And if the circus-like atmosphere of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has got you down, at least former Bomber Trevor Kennerd produced these guys - did I mention they're all brothers (Luke, Jake and Cody Kennerd)?
